The Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA) confirmed on Tuesday that its delegates to the Democratic National Convention voted unanimously on Monday to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee for the president during its convention next month.
In a statement posted to the social media platform X, the Virginia Democrats confirmed the delegates “met virtually” and “unanimously voted to join President Joe Biden in endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2024 Democratic nomination for President of the United States.”
Biden ended his candidacy in a Sunday post to X and later endorsed Harris to succeed him in a second post.
DPVA Chairwoman Susan Swecker stated the party was joining Biden and declared Harris “the right choice and leader not only to unify our party, but our country.”
A second post by DPVA contained no text but offered emojis, including clapping hands, fire, a siren, and two exclamation points. The party attached an image to the post that reiterated the delegates’ plan to nominate Harris.

The confirmation that Virginia’s DNC delegates would vote for Harris came shortly after she claimed to have secured the support of the required number of delegates to become the party’s nominee.
“I am proud to have secured the broad support needed to become our party’s nominee,” Harris stated, according to a post on the social media platform X, noting her appreciation for Biden and Democrats already backing her.
While limited polling data is available due to the novelty of Harris’ candidacy, five polls tracked by The Hill suggest Harris has just a 2.6 percent lead over former President Donald Trump in Virginia, where Biden was determined the winner by more than 450,000 votes during the 2020 election.
Multiple states’ delegations to the DNC have now declared their support for Harris, including the Tennessee delegation, where the Tennessee Democratic Party was among the first to confirm its delegates would back the vice president at the convention in August.
The election circumstances changed significantly after Biden’s departure, so Trump confirmed on Monday that he would “absolutely” commit to multiple televised debates against Harris before November.
Biden’s disastrous debate performance against Trump in June sparked the calls that led to his resignation on Sunday.
